About Verdant
Verdant is an ecological waterscaping studio near Bromsgrove, creating natural swimming ponds, wildlife ponds, and chemical-free pools for homes and estates across Worcestershire, Herefordshire, Warwickshire and the wider West Midlands. We make water features that feel like they have always been part of the garden.
A natural swimming pond is more than a pool with planting around it. It's a balanced habitat that keeps itself clear through plants and biology rather than chlorine. You get soft, clean water to swim in over summer, and a home for dragonflies, frogs and birds the rest of the year. That's what specialist design gives you, and it's all we do.
Our Philosophy
Most companies build something for your garden. We build something your garden has been missing.
The Method
No chlorine. No dosing schedule. A natural pond cleans itself the way a healthy lake does. Tap through the three parts of the system, this is the whole trick.
Cross section, simplified
What We Build
We work to one simple principle: build with the land, not on top of it. Whether it's a swimming pond, a restored Victorian fountain, or a new wetland, the same care goes into every project we take on.
Chemical-free swimming in your own landscape. Biological filtration zones and aquatic planting keep the water clear and alive, from intimate plunge pools to large family swim ponds.
Restoration of historic water features on listed estates and heritage properties. Working to conservation standards to revive fountains, rills, cascade channels, and ornamental pools as they were intended.
Regenerative construction for estates, landowners and rewilding projects. Wetland creation, dry stone work, SuDS systems and engineered habitats that return real, measurable biodiversity to the land.
The earthworks beneath every good waterscape. Sympathetic groundworks, drainage, natural stone and planting schemes that frame the water and tie the wider garden together.
Natural Water
This is the work we love most. Every pond is drawn from scratch around your site, taking account of its light, its levels, and how you want to use it. A planted regeneration zone does the job a chlorine plant would in a conventional pool, keeping the swimming water clear and soft with no chemicals at all.
The range runs from a compact cold-water plunge for year-round dipping to a generous family pond with shallow beaches and proper depth to swim. Whatever the scale, you get water that's a pleasure to swim in through summer and a quietly beautiful feature the rest of the year.
Heritage
Historic water features are some of the most demanding restoration work there is, and some of the most rewarding. Verdant restores and reinstates fountains, rills, cascades, formal canals, and ornamental ponds on listed estates, manor houses, and period properties across the West Midlands.
Conservation sits at the heart of every heritage project. We work with traditional materials and methods, including lime mortar, natural stone and hand-set paving, and alongside conservation officers and listed-building consent where it's needed, so the work honours the original design while quietly meeting modern standards of safety and performance.
Conservation
For landowners, farms and conservation projects, we build landscapes that give something back. That covers wetland creation, reedbed filtration, wildlife pond complexes, sustainable drainage (SuDS), and dry stone work, all designed to return biodiversity to the land and hold water where it belongs.
This is construction with a measurable return. Since 2024, most new development in England has to deliver at least a 10% biodiversity net gain. That gives well-made habitat genuine market value, and means landowners can create and even sell the biodiversity units developers need. From great crested newt ponds to reed-fringed wetlands, the result is land that does more for wildlife than it did before.
Landscape
Every good waterscape depends on the groundwork beneath it. Verdant handles the full picture below the surface and around it, from excavation, levels, drainage and access through to natural stone, terracing, and the planting that ties water and garden together.
We plant with natives and pollinator-friendly species chosen for your soil and aspect, so the planting softens stonework, frames the water and draws wildlife in quickly. The result looks settled and established from its first summer, rather than raw or bolted on.
Honest Comparison
Both hold water you can swim in. Almost everything else about them is different. This is the comparison we would want to see before spending this kind of money.
| Natural swimming pond | Conventional pool | |
|---|---|---|
| The water | Soft, living water. No chlorine smell, no stinging eyes, no dry skin afterwards. | Chemically treated. Needs constant dosing and testing to stay usable. |
| Wildlife | A habitat. Dragonflies, birds and amphibians often arrive within the first year. | Hostile by design. Chlorine keeps everything out, including life. |
| Running costs | One low energy circulation pump. No chemicals to buy, ever. | Heating, dosing and filtration typically make it the most expensive thing in the garden to run. |
| Winter | Freezes over gracefully and carries on. No draining, no cover, no spring shock treatment. | Closed for months under a cover, then reopened with a chemical reset. |
| Through the years | Matures. Planting thickens, edges soften, and it looks better at five years than at one. | Ages. Liners fade and tiles date, and it never looks better than the day it was finished. |
| Maintenance | Seasonal planting care, occasional skimming, an annual once-over. | Weekly testing and dosing, filter care and chemical storage. |
One fair note for balance: a heated conventional pool holds 28 degrees all summer. A natural pond is closer to wild swimming, warm in the shallows by July, bracing in May. Most people drawn to living water count that as the point.

Why Verdant
A good waterscape shouldn't be at its best on handover day. Ours are built to improve with time, with clearer water, fuller planting and more wildlife as the seasons go by.
From the first survey to the final fill, we photograph and film every project by drone. You get clear updates as the work goes on, and a proper record to keep long after we've left.
We don't work from templates or off-the-shelf kits. Every design starts from your ground, its light, levels and planting, so the finished water sits exactly where it should.
Who You Deal With
Verdant is deliberately small. The person who walks your site is the person who prices it, and the person who prices it is the person standing in the hole. No sales layer, no subcontractor roulette, and a direct line to us from first call to first swim.
We are a new studio and we will not pretend otherwise. You will find no borrowed photographs and no invented reviews here. What you get instead is the full attention of a company building its name on your project, current ecological methods, and every stage documented properly.
The Living Year
A chlorinated pool has two states: open and closed. A natural pond has four seasons, and every one of them earns its place in the garden.
Marginal plants push through, frogspawn appears in the shallows and the water polishes itself as the biology comes back online. By late spring the first brave swims begin.
Care this season: cut back last year's growth, first skim
Warm shallows, clear deep water and the best seat in the garden. Dragonflies patrol the regeneration zone while you swim past them. Evening swims are the reward for the whole project.
Care this season: an occasional surface skim, that is mostly it
The planting turns and the water goes still. A discreet net over the swim zone catches leaf fall while the wildlife stocks up around the margins.
Care this season: leaf net up, final trim of the planting
No draining, no cover, no closing weekend. The pond freezes over gracefully and holds its shape in the frost. Beneath the ice, everything simply waits.
Care this season: almost none, enjoy it from the window
How It Works
We visit and get to know the land, its contours, light and existing planting. No cost, no obligation. You'll get an honest view of what's possible and what would work best on the site.
A detailed design proposal with a full written quote. We explain every element, from excavation and filtration zones through to planting and access. No hidden costs.
Careful, clean work that's documented throughout. You're kept informed at every stage, both for your own records and for our portfolio.
A full handover with planting and seasonal guidance, plus ongoing support as the pond settles in. We'd rather build a lasting relationship than just walk away once it's filled.
Honest Pricing
Most builders make you phone them just to hear a number. We would rather you knew the ballpark before we ever speak. Four quick questions, one honest guide range.
Two people. A handful of builds a year. The diary fills in order.
The Record
From first survey to first swim, every Verdant project is documented by drone. The groundworks, the fill, the first season of growth. A full record, not a highlights reel.
No stock photos. No borrowed portfolios. When work appears here, it will be ours.

Common Questions
Every pond is bespoke, so the cost comes down to size, site access and design. As a rough guide, a compact natural swimming pond usually starts in the region of £55,000, with larger family ponds and estate projects above that. After a free site visit you receive a full written quote with no hidden costs and no obligation.
A dedicated regeneration zone of gravel beds and aquatic plants filters the water biologically. The plants and beneficial bacteria remove the nutrients that algae feed on, which keeps the swim zone clear and clean. No chlorine and no harsh chemicals.
Yes. A well designed natural swimming pond is clean and safe to swim in. Because there are no chemicals in the water there is no chlorine smell, no stinging eyes and no dry skin. The swim zone is kept separate from the planted filtration zone by design.
Like any open water, ponds and young children need thought. We design for it with gradual beach entries, shallow shelves, and secure fencing or cover options where they are wanted. We talk this through at the site visit so the design fits how your family will actually use the water.
A pond in a private garden usually does not need planning permission. The main exceptions are listed settings, conservation areas and larger engineering works. Checking this properly is part of our free site survey, and where consent is needed we help you prepare for it.
Most garden builds take between four and ten weeks on site, depending on scale and access. The planting then establishes over its first season, and the water gets clearer and better as the pond matures.
Less than most people expect, and far less than a chlorinated pool. Seasonal planting care, occasional skimming and an annual check are usually all it takes. Every project is handed over with full guidance and we stay on hand while the pond establishes.
Often, yes. An existing pool shell can be converted by adding a regeneration zone and biological filtration, which saves serious excavation cost and turns a chemical liability into living water. Ask us to look at it during the site visit.
A natural pond does not shut down for winter. It can freeze over safely, the plants die back and return, and the wildlife carries on beneath the surface. There is no draining, no cover and no spring chemical shock, just a quieter version of the same living water.
Pond linings and materials are covered by the relevant manufacturer guarantees. Living elements such as plants and natural materials cannot be guaranteed. Every quote is written and fixed before work starts.
